Casa de Pomares is the result of the rehabilitation of an existing villa, transformed into a vacation home for a couple seeking tranquility outside Lisbon. The project balances tradition and innovation, preserving the building’s original identity while incorporating contemporary solutions that guarantee comfort and efficiency.
The structure was completely rehabilitated, using a wooden construction system. The aim was to enhance the lightness of the intervention, as well as strengthening the house’s connection with the surrounding landscape.

Access design
transforming paths
The refurbishment of the side façade gave us the opportunity to rethink the access to the house. The existing staircase, in an advanced state of disrepair and with a direct connection to the national road, posed a risk in terms of both safety and integration into the surroundings.
As an alternative, an entry route through the garden was proposed, offering a more fluid transition between the exterior and interior. This solution not only reinforces the experience of arrival, but also establishes a more balanced relationship with the landscape.

Unique Features
- Integration: The intervention respects the identity of the original house, integrating it into the rural landscape. The choice to rehabilitate the wooden construction system promotes the identity of the house.
- re’ Design: The basement, once a neglected space, was transformed into a hub for technical infrastructure, freeing up the living areas and guaranteeing the functionality of the house. The roof, in turn, was redesigned to create a mezzanine, a reading space and an office.
- Architectural Elements: The original fireplace, a central element, evokes the memory of the building and defines the character of the house. It has been rethought and relocated to continue serving its function.
