Projecting on a family legacy

The building in Largo dos Lóios belongs to the history of downtown Porto. In this building stood for years the iconic lamp store, and its owners decided to perpetuate its history by giving it a new use.

In the family for more than 8 decades, this building has required a perpetuation of the existing founding principles.

Rehabilitate history

architecture must be able to mold itself to new uses

The lamp store played a fundamental role in the development of commerce in Lóios square. Thus its owners intended to maintain its history and at the same time adapt to a new use, a new mode of commerce: catering.

It is intended to create infrastructure for whatever its next user may be.

Keeping the original floor, recovering the design of the baseboards and the finishing touches to the ceiling, were the lines that were followed to project a new use.

A new routine, the redesign of space

Projecting on the city’s historical heritage

To provide the building with new contemporary equipment capable of integrating with the existing building.

Creating a space for restoration is a greater challenge when it comes to a pre-existence that is more than a century old.

This project was carried out as if it were a detailed surgical intervention. Our goal is not to irrecoverably transform the existing.
