Preserving history

The development of the preliminary study was meticulously designed to preserve the rich architectural history of the Alentejo, bearing witness to the heritage of the past through the surrounding design of the buildings and façades. The interpretive approach to local architecture is evident in the openings, which follow the shapes and proportions rooted in Alentejo’s past. A careful selection of smaller trees highlights the architecture of the buildings, while a larger tree gives centrality to the new square.

Respecting the typology plan for each building, the interior redesign is based on the symmetry of the rooms, the optimization of space in the living rooms and the strategic layout of the sanitary facilities. The current porch was designed with an irregular, perforated corrugated sheet in the same color as the sheeting of the current warehouse, giving it a distinctive character, allowing natural light in and exerting less load on the existing structure.

Create a new possibility for the same space

A different solution is presented, called Solution B, compared to the proposal to keep the rehabilitation as originally designed. This solution is a proposal that aims to improve the livability and experience of the entire estate. It includes a spatial reorganization that highlights the importance of the internal square, creating a clear distinction between the living and operational areas.

The relocation of the workshop porch and the garage for equipment to support agricultural production and the replacement with the original rehabilitation of the building complement the existing volumetry. This not only results in a greater number of dwellings (current floor -1), but also gives the square an attractive and playful character, with the central body now serving as a communal space
