Hotel Unit in the City Center

República 869 is an 8-story building on one of the busiest avenues in Matosinhos. A small studio hotel unit is designed with a careful and minimal choice of materials.

A facade articulated with its surroundings, but detached from its neighborhood. It uses concrete with fiber to allow it to create an organic form and movement.

The building’s strong relationship with Matosinhos was an initial premise of the project. It became relevant to give tourists total openness to and with the city by creating larger spans articulated with the exterior spaces (balconies or terrace). As well as, to create an organic movement in the facade that would refer to nautical reality.

Choice of Materials

The characteristics of white and the minimalism of concrete

Since the modernist generation there has been an understanding of the color white as absolute beauty. As a project this color is understood as a way to create the exception in the rest of the urbanized set. As a release from the neighboring buildings.

Being the white color a great reflector, this façade, besides being a mirror of the city, also allows a clear entrance of light in all the studios and common areas, improving the tourist experience during their stay.

The slender and curved design in the elevations was made possible by the encounter of concrete and fiber, which granted a possible approximation to nautical elements.

Aparthotel organization

Modern studios connected to the city

For the hotel, there was a need to design a studio typology capable of hosting two and/or four people for periods of up to a month. Thus, the architecture of the space was treated until the detail of the furniture. It was possible to transform spaces with small areas, into pleasant, open studios.
The social activities are on the ground floor, and the technical areas are on the 1st floor.
